The second workshop for projects of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) took place on November 23. Around 60 representatives of IKI projects as well as their Vietnamese partners met on site in Hanoi – another 40 people, including representatives of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, were connected via video conference. The aim of the workshop was to accelerate the exchange on entry points with regard to the recently published revised NDC in Vietnam, and to identify potential synergies between the projects. In addition, the participants engaged in knowledge sharing and exchanged on their implementation experiences. The political partners also referred to important cross-cutting policy frameworks which are currently under development, such as the “Socioeconomic Development Strategy 2021-2030” and derived “Socioeconomic Development Plan”, and Vietnam´s “Green Growth Action Strategy 2021-2030”.

Subsequent to the Workshop, a training on “Pandemic Prevention and Green Recovery” was conducted. Despite Vietnam´s economy still being on a growth path in 2020, the country is experiencing an economic downturn compared to the projected growth rate, which runs the risk that decision-makers may adhere to a non-sustainable development rationale based on minimizing costs and maximizing short-term profit. Hence, it is important to raise awareness on the relevance of a Green Recovery for Vietnam, and its potential for driving climate action and transforming the growth model. Further, relevant topics were elaborated that may be suitable for Green Recovery Approaches in the context of new climate change and biodiversity projects.
