New ´Tree Map Database` to better manage the protection of domestic biodiversity and ecosystems

In line with the Prime Minister’s initiative of planting one billion new trees in the next five years, MONRE has set up a digital tree map to aid the identification, management, and care of trees throughout Vietnam.

The Vietnam tree map database includes information on plant species, existing location, planting methods, growth characteristics, specific care, and requirements of each species. This application helps relevant stakeholders to assess the status of plant varieties distribution, identify specific areas and places that need planting enhancement, supervise the stages of growth and reservation after planting, and enhance the connection between plants suppliers and soil sources for planting. The digital map will also identify endangered areas that need urgent ecosystem protection and restoration and will contribute to soil salinity prevention and anti-desertification.

Besides, the application also provides detailed information regarding land uses and partition planning including strategic plans for new planting and ecosystem restauration to improve environmental protection and climate change response. The real-time updated database will hence increase the transparency of plant and forest protection activities and encourage community contribution and supervision over the long-term progress of planting in Vietnam.

The 4.0 smart phone application will be accessible not only to governmental and local authorities, but there will also be a public component accessible to all Vietnamese people in the near future.

To ensure the efficiency of planting and monitoring activities, all important figures including activated land areas, stakeholders/organisations in charge, planting progresses, and plant survival ratios will be provided transparently and accessible to every citizen.
