A National Steering Committee has been established with a mission to support the Prime Minister in the implementation of the commitments the Vietnamese Government has pledged during COP26. The Committee works to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination and guides the overall direction to fasten and align the implementation process.  

Both Vietnam’s Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister will act as the head and subhead of the Committee, in charge of steering and supervising implementation.  17 members, consisting of Ministers from 11 Ministries as well as Head Representatives of further ministries and government bodies, have the main responsibility to implement policies and coordinate with relevant actors, localities, and international partners to promote cooperation.  The appointed members must also propose, add, and amend new policies and solutions towards the achievement of Vietnam’s commitments at COP26. 

The Committee will meet periodically with an aim to develop a plan focusing on performance evaluation and solutions to further pressing issues beyond the scope of the current work. During these meetings, the members will report to the Prime Minister on their progress and amend their sectoral Action Plans according to adjustments discussed and agreed upon. MONRE will serve as the Standing Member to facilitate the meetings and will establish and coordinate direct working groups and provide support to the Head of the Steering Committee.  

The set-up of Vietnam’s National Steering Committee is a crucial step in governing the implementation of the COP26 commitments as it will foster strengthened coordination across all sectors and levels.
