International Climate Initiative (IKI) in Viet Nam

First ever Vietnam – Germany Energy Day held in Berlin

On March 31 the Vietnam- Germany Energy Day was held for the first time in Berlin with the objective to further enhance the cooperation in the field of energy between both countries and to support the achievement of  Vietnam´s net-zero target by 2050.  The event was chaired by Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Over the years, the German Government has supported Viet Nam through the provision of concessional loans, technical assistance programs and financial support. GIZ’s Energy Support Program has supported the implementation of many projects in the energy sector in Viet Nam and helped contribute to Vietnam’s legal framework for a just energy transition.

The Vietnamese- German Energy Day will be held annually from now on. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An. During the event, both parties discussed necessary measures for a green energy transition and further cooperation towards a low-carbon transition of the energy sector. The central objective of the cooperation is to accelerate the development of renewable energy and increase energy efficiency. Deputy Minister Dang Hoang An expressed his hope that the two countries will coordinate to implement specific and effective cooperation activities and continue future plans to promote green growth.

Mr. Patrick Graichen, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, highly appreciated Vietnam’s goal for carbon neutrality by 2050 and to phase out coal power by the 2040s in the context of the current global challenges related to climate change. He affirmed that Germany would continue to support and join hands with Viet Nam in its efforts for a just and green energy transformation. As the rotating Chairman of the G7 group of industrial and developed countries, Germany wants to support emerging countries in the energy transition and Viet Nam is among Germany’s strategic partners in climate and environmental protection.
