Development of a Water Resource Management Tool in the Mekong River Basin

A group of scientists from the University of Natural Sciences (VNU) and the National Remote Sensing Department, Southern Regional Hydrometeorology Station (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) has just introduced a hydro-meteorological forecasting system to support water resource management in the Mekong River basin.

The research was carried out in the framework of the project “Building the methodological basis and technology for water resources management in river basins in the absence of hydro-meteorological monitoring data for Mekong River Region” (2019-2022).

The research aims to overcome the current challenge that water resources management tools depend heavily on data inputs. However, large inter-national rivers such as the Mekong often encounter problems with data sharing between riparian countries.

The online database is automatically updated in a regular interval. In the future, the data set will be shared with scientists and management units for application in research and water resource management.

The study consists of three approaches: Using traditional tools and hydrological models associated with assimilation of input data; building a core model for the main area of the Mekong and also tributaries with reservoirs will use separate flow prediction tools; applying smart technology to calculate the output.
