The fourth high-level meeting of the Vietnam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG) took place in the first month of 2022, setting the year with successful dialogues on Vietnam green energy transition. The event, chaired by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and co-chaired by the European Union and the World Bank in Vietnam, welcomed over 150 delegates across different energy sector stakeholders in Vietnam.  

The meeting celebrated the positive contributions from the VEPG over the last four years as a high-level policy dialogue forum in strengthening the partnerships between the government and national and international stakeholders for a sustainable development of the energy sector.  The dialogue discusses the sustainable energy transition of Vietnam with a focus on the development of energy policies, incluing the Power Development Plan VIII (PDP VIII), and the implementation of Vietnam net-zero commitments at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in the energy sector.  

H.E Dang Hoang An, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Investment and Trade (MOIT) stated that MOIT was assigned by the Government to develop the PDP VIII, aligning with the Resolution No.55 of the Politburo and National Green Growth Strategy 2021-2030, vision to 2050. In the high-level thematic panel discussion, representatives from reknown organizations and the government emphasized the decarbonization of the energy sector with the expansion of renewable energy in PDP VIII and recommended possible solutions for current problems, with a vision to a greener and cleaner development of the energy sector.   

H.E. Giorgio Aliberti, Ambassador of the European Union to Vietnam, and Ms. Carolyn Turk, Country Director of the World Bank in Vietnam, both acknowledged Vietnam’s commitment to a cleaner energy transition and confirms EU and World Bank continuing support for VEPG and the Vietnamese government in the process.  

A highlight of the meeting was the introduction of five new technical working groups including Power Sector Strategic Planning, Renewable Energy, Grid Integration and Grid Infrastructure, Energy Efficiency and Energy Market. These groups will work to identify key topics for the country’s urgent needs and propose solutions for current bottlenecks in the energy transition. 

The meeting concluded with VEPG new slogan “Together, delivering the sustainable transition in Vietnam!”, aiming to support for the government in achieving energy security and a circular, people-centred economy with efficient co-operations with international partners.
