UN Climate Summit: Vietnam’s Prime Minister affirms commitment to sustainable economic growth in harmony with the environment

On the occasion of the 74th Annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York which focused on climate action and sustainable development and embraced the UN Climate Summit on 23 September, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made a video statement, hence supporting an initiative of the WWF and other global leaders calling for an “emergency deal” to balance economic development and sustainability.

In his statement, Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasizes that sustainable development and the minimization of losses in nature are key factors in Vietnam’s political decision-making processes. He mentions the country to make great efforts to join forces with other nations on its transition towards a green and circular economy model. He also reaffirms that climate action, resource management and environmental protection are always being considered as key factors in policy making. Further, he sends a strong message to other world leaders: “As a reliable and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam seeks to join hands with the international community and other stakeholders to call upon the UN for the development of a Declaration for a New Deal for Nature and People; emphasizing the building of a harmonious relationship between economic development and environmental protection, as well as between nature and people”.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh attended the UNGA and the New York Climate Summit as the representative of Vietnam.
