Vietnam´s participation in the 56th session of UNFCCC subsidiary bodies (SB56)

From June 6 to 16, the 56th session of the UNFCCC subsidiary bodies (SB56) has taken place in Bonn, Germany. The conference was held in person for the first time in 3 years, allowing Parties to discuss GHG reduction measures, climate adaptation, climate finance for developing countries, and loss and damage caused by climate change.

In her welcome statement, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary, UNFCCC, has urged countries “to accelerate climate actions and raise ambitions to achieve the commitments of the Paris Agreement to limit the global warming to below 1,5 C. The world expects it!” Espinosa also announced the completion of her term after six years as the Executive Secretary, UNFCCC. She encouraged the delegates to continue their support for the Subsidiary Bodies, and to work together pushing forward the negotiations and climate response.

The outcome of the sessions at SB56 will create the premise for the negotiations at COP27, expected to take place by the end of this year in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. COP27 will focus on implementation and how nations plan to execute their commitments through the development and implementation of legal frameworks and programs to achieve the Paris Agreement.

The delegation of Vietnam has participated both online and in-person at SB56 including representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MONRE), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), Ministry of Finance (MOF), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The negotiation sessions started in the afternoon of the opening day. Before the negotiations, throughout June 4-5 2022, G77 and China held a meeting to prepare for the sessions at SB56.
