A delegation that consisted of various experts from Vietnam, Argentina, Ghana, Thailand paid a visit to Germany from 21 August to 27 August 2022, to learn and exchange on climate protection in chemistry. The study tour took place in the framework of the project titled “Climate Action Program for the Chemical Industry” (CAPCI) which is implemented by GIZ and funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI).  

Chemical and petrochemical industries are responsible for about 10% of the world’s final energy demand and 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, promoting sustainable models in the chemical industry has become a priority on the German climate finance Agenda.

The four key objectives of this study tour were: (i) to share practical knowledge and skills on the state of the art and innovations in the chemical industry for climate change mitigation, (ii) to encourage professional connection and networking among participants, (iii) to learn the application of new technology within the chemical industry for environmental planning; (iv) to share example and best practices for climate protection across the entire value chain of production and use of chemicals.  

The study tour was designed in a way to complement the Training of Trainers Program that was organized virtually from 7 June to 21 July to provide know-how on policy, technical and managerial aspects of climate change mitigation in the chemical industry.  

The Vietnamese Delegation, including representatives from the Vietnam Chemicals Agency, Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Vietnam National Chemical Group and the Hanoi University of Science and Technology attended many activities during the study tour, including technical visits to Chemical Industrial Parks and chemical companies such as Hoechst, BASF, Chempark, CONVESTRO. Also, a visit to the ACHEMA event (International Exhibition-Congress on Chemical Engineering, Environmental Protection and Biotechnology) was part of the agenda; and a workshop and conference on the CAPCI project was held at the GIZ office in Bonn.

“The study tour was an exciting opportunity to get an impression of the green economy approach, the circular economy model and low-carbon emission measures in Germany. Thanks to the warm support of the organizing team, we felt welcome and comfortable. After this study tour, we plan to adopt this know-how in Vietnam and to inform upcoming Decrees and Circulars on a green economy, disseminate the latest technology, and organize training programs for technical officers and students”, shared Assoc. Prof. Dr Mai Thanh Tung, professor at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
