International Climate Initiative (IKI) in Viet Nam

On 10th June 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) has sent Official Letter no. 182/LDCP (“OL182”) to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), and the Office of the Government (OoG) for guidance on the approval of the Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8).

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) submitted a plan to the Prime Minister under two scenarios including one basic scenario and one high-ambition scenario (towards climate neutrality by 2050). The latter aims to drastically reduce coal power, and sharply increase onshore and offshore wind power, while solar power development: Developing LNG to replace polluted coal power and hydroelectric power sources meeting due.

The Prime Minister basically agreed to bring the contents of the PDP8 to the meeting of the Permanent Government as soon as possible, so that this plan is to be released still in June. However, before the meeting of the Permanent Government, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh to direct the MOIT to clarify some key concerns, which address the feasibility of the PDP8, solar power development, and LNG import.
