ABOUT THE SOUTHEAST ASIA INFORMATION PLATFORM FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION (SIPET)

BACKGROUND

In a small survey of energy transition stakeholders in Southeast Asia, respondents highlighted common challenges they face. These include a lack of institutional capacity, a lack of platforms for timely information and intelligence sharing, excessive time spent in coordination, and duplication of work because stakeholders are unaware of others’ activities. To address the gap, the Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE) Programme designed and developed the Southeast Asia Information Platform for the Energy Transition (SIPET).

WHAT IS SIPET

SIPET is an interactive knowledge and coordination platform targeted at professionals working on the energy transition in the region. SIPET’s target users include research institutions, universities, clean energy project developers, civil society organizations, government agencies, and (donor community) development agencies and development programs. SIPET is designed to facilitate dialogue and promote coordination in the region’s power sector to support the acceleration of the energy transition in Southeast Asia. SIPET’s role in accelerating the energy transition will be critically important, as Southeast Asia is one of the fastest developing regions in the world, with energy demand projected to grow by 80% by 2050.

SIPET’s KEY FEATURES

SIPET will tackle these challenges with four key functions: a suite of Power Sector Resources, a Project Database and Mapping Tool, a Knowledge-Sharing Hub, and a Community Forum for energy transition professionals.

  • The Project Mapping Tool, developed by CASE in cooperation with the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), maps the key stakeholders involved in energy transition projects in the region, helping donors and development partners working on the energy transition to identify and build partnership opportunities to create greater synergy and impact.
  • The SIPET Knowledge Hub is a portal for sharing news, research results, the latest publications, and upcoming events. This portal will allow practitioners in the field to easily share relevant information and news, therefore facilitating improved dialogue and coordination across Southeast Asia’s power sectors.
  • The SIPET Community Forum will bring together donors and development partners to streamline information sharing and collaboration.
  • The Power Sector Resources featured on SIPET include the Power Transition Progress Tool; a section on Power Sector Snapshots (both developed by CASE), and Power Plant Trackers (developed by Global Energy Monitor). Together, these resources will help energy transition professionals stay updated on the latest energy developments related to the region’s power sector transition.

On 10 March 2023, we launched our latest resource the Power Sector Data Browser, and its complementary Power Sector Snapshots. Power Sector Data Browser is the central place for accessing SEA Power Sector data. Accurate and up-to-date data is essential to understand the current state of energy systems, identify areas for improvement, and track progress over time. However, the energy transition is rapidly changing and requires access to a wide range of information and data. So, this resource is useful to energy transition professionals, including researchers, think tanks, clean energy advocates, and policymakers, who often need help finding relevant information in one place. Power Sector Snapshots add qualitative context to data based on the Power Sector Data Browser to provide a quick overview of the Power Sector in different countries.
