LOW EMISSION BUILDING MATERIALS FOR LOW CARBON HOUSING PROGRAM

On 16 March 2023, the workshop on “Low emission Building Materials for Low carbon Housing Program” was hosted by Viet Nam Association of Building Materials in cooperation with VIETBUIL HANOI 2023 and PEEB (global IKI project on Energy Efficiency in Buildings) as part of activities to mark the International Exhibition VietBuild Hanoi 2023.  The workshop aimed at encouraging entrepreneurs to examine and maintain the manufacturing of new and hi-tech products to meet the market demand on urban construction and social housing toward sustainable development. This was attended by MOC officials, academia research institutions and industrial associations.

Dr. Thai Duy Sam – Vice President, General Secretary of Viet Nam Association of Building Materials highlighted in his speech the National Housing Development Strategy for 2021 – 2030, with the vision to 2045. Accordingly, Viet Nam strives to achieve the target of the average housing floor area per person to 27 sq.m by 2025 and to 30 sq.m by 2030 by ensuring the safety and security standard; meeting the quality of construction, architecture, comfort, and environment; being able to increase resilience to climate change, to minimise energy usage; and providing low carbon emission solutions in accordance with the promulgated standards. To fullfil these requirements, low carbon building materials have been considered as the key solution for the housing building in general and the social housing building in particular.

In addition, promoting communication of the low carbon materials to increase the public awareness of green building was underscored by Dr. Sam. In fact, to facilitate the application of these new friendly materials, especially for the social housing, the authorities need to issue the standards, technical guidelines, user manual, economic and technical norms.

During the workshop, industrial experts delivered presentations on four main topics: (i) National policies on social housing development and preferential loans for low-income household; (ii) Ultra-high performance concrete application in one million apartments building for workers and low income individual; (iii) Architecture and low emission building materials for social housing; Ecological and natural paints with free of plastic and other harmful toxins; (iv) Social building against excessive heat.

Within the framework of the workshop, a talk show on “Low emission building materials and low emission housing” was organized with the participation of representatives from relevant Departments of the Ministry of Construction to discuss and draw the roadmap of the Ministry in the development and promulgation of green building and low emission building materials policies toward the national net-zero target by 2050.
